How to Apply Computer Vision in Everyday Life

Re-thinking space with CV

--

As in the previous articles we discussed the history and the main concepts that characterize the functioning of Computer Vision, it’s time to dive in and get to the way technology impacts people’s life.

Computer Vision is currently employed in several industries, such as Automotive, to develop self-driving cars, Healthcare, Security and more.

In this article, we are going to talk about why computer vision matters in the Retail industry as well.

In-Store today

As many brick and mortar stores have already built and integrated online platforms, other digital-native brands who gained popularity online are opening physical shops, not with the purpose of directly selling their products, but simply providing retailtainment in the form of refreshments and pick-up services.

The physical encounters with customers can reveal great opportunities in terms of better understanding of customer’s behavior and preferences, opening to a more accurate services customization -: in a market where 62% of customers expect discounts based on purchase history, and 82% of millennials still prefer in-store shopping as a retail channel, enhancing in-store experience seems the way to go.

Real-time emotional and behavioral data have the power of providing important insights on how the brand impacts visitors, leading a company to make the most efficient decisions about its marketing tactics.

What Computer Vision can do. Be part of an application

We created a mobile application capable to identify products in a store and automatically add them to cart based on computer vision and machine learning capabilities.

We used dedicated machine learning devices Neural Compute Stick with Intel Movidius VPUto track and identify products in a store.

How does the app work?

The mobile app will use the camera to take pictures and identify products, using CNN pre-trained models with store products.

Once identified, products can be added to cart or bookmarked for later buying or sharing with friends. Bookmarked products will be visible in augmented reality inside the store, making customers’ life easier when it comes to immediately spot what they are looking for.

Key Features

Based on user profile behavior and preferences:

● Special discounts can be accessed based on retail discount rules

● User can receive suggestion of other related products

● Bookmarked products’ locations are displayed on interactive store map using AR

● Micro-influencing Marketing Campaigns

● Sharing products pictures on social media

Price Discount in practice

Price Discount app, Augmented Reality feature

● Walking in the shopping area it’s all you will have to do

● Take pictures of the products interest. Our application will automatically detect and show you the best price for your desired product

● Add product directly to shopping cart or bookmark its location for later visiting

● Once added to shopping cart, it’s only a checkout step until you can have it just at your home door

● Bookmarked products will be visible on augmented reality of the location, so you can easily get back to them anytime

CONCLUSION

As we see, Computer Vision based technologies, combined with Augmented Reality features, are changing the way we interact with the physical world, providing us with relevant information and intuitive ways to experience spaces and visualize data.
