We get asked a lot of questions about user adoption for augmented reality (AR) like what apps there are, what their DAUs are like, what their growth trajectories are, how many people use the “AR” feature and what is the potential for their growth etc….etc..

Although a lot of people cite “Pokemon Go” as an AR app, it does NOT reflect true user adoption because most players play the game in the non-AR mode. We were fortunate to meet John Hanke (CEO of Niantic) at a meetup to ask him the same question and guess what he said,

“No one really uses the AR mode.”

When we analyzed the overall user adoption in today’s apps, Snapchat has the majority share with the highest user engagement in terms of AR in the US. Even though Facebook has integrated a number of AR features in their camera, their adoption is quite low but quickly growing. So if you are a brand marketer and experimenting with Augmented Reality, Snapchat is probably your best bet. However, if you are looking to capture audiences outside of the Snapchat teens we have put together a list of amazing AR apps that have a growing audience as well as adoption rates.

You might be surprised to see some apps in the list like Camera360, which is a selfie app. This is because of a rising misconception about AR apps as the “rear-view” camera apps (like table-top games). Apple’s Launch event and Google I/O demos have created this perception because their demos always revolved around the “rear-view” AR games to show off the capabilities of ARKit. Apps like Pokemon Go fit this category closely where you are augmenting surroundings with virtual characters, hence the misconception.
