Virtual Reality Development Resources

I was asked recently for some resources and readings for VR and Unity development resources. I thought it would be easier to compile a list here, rather than send individual resources.

Unity Development

  1. Unity Fundamentals Course from Pluralsight. (link) While Pluralsight has a subscription fee (about $12/month), they have several courses on Unity development. They also have tests you can take to show off your knowledge and get an idea of the level of your skillset. I think they’re pretty cool.
Here’s my Unity skill. (I find that I’ve set a goal of getting 300… lol)
And my (not really) amazing C++ skill. Note that I’ve never done anything in C++. haha!

2. Complete C# Unity Developer 3D by Ben Tristem on Udemy. (link) This is the course I took that got me started with Unity. I really enjoy the fact that the instructors encourage you to try your hand at challenges but then also show how they’d do them.

3. Unity’s Tutorials (link) These tutorials have been a great resource when I needed to learn about Unity’s events and delegates. They also have tutorials for all their services and best practices.

4. Unity’s Blog (link) Unity’s always posting really interesting articles.

5. Unity’s list of “What NOT to do in Unity”. (link) This post was originally posted in their “Creator’s Corner”.

Virtual Reality

  1. Unity’s Tutorials for VR (link) These tutorials get to the basics of VR development. These aren’t for any specific platform though, but it’s a great resource for learning core concepts.
  2. Oculus documentation (link) If you’re developing for Oculus (Rift, Go, GearVR, Santa Cruz), this is the place to go. Their documentation and forums have been amazing.
  3. Google Cardboard/Daydream docs (link) When I first started developing in Unity, the example apps and tutorials were a lot more thorough. Lately, the documentation can be hard to navigate for beginners looking to understand what’s needed to put together a basic app.
  4. RoadToVR (link) This is a great site for industry news and staying current on what’s what in VR.
  5. Voices of VR Podcast (link) This podcast is amazing for exposure to VR in a variety of contexts. It’s really thought provoking. Since there are over 600 episodes, they’ve got a top ten list for an easy place to start.
  6. Udacity’s VR Nanodegree. (link) A great place for beginners to get started making a ton of VR projects. By the end, you’ll have made 8 VR projects, and you’ll get personalized feedback on your work as you go. It’s definitely worth it.

Have other resources you’d add to this list? Let me know. :)
